My name is Aaron Massey. I’m a doctoral student in Computer Science at North Carolina State University. My research interests include computer security, privacy, regulatory compliance, and managing legal requirements in software engineering.
As a recipient of a 2008 Google Policy Fellowship, I spent the summer of 2008 working with Jim Harper, Directory of Information Policy Studies at the Cato Institute. I am also the recipient of the 2008-2009 Walter H. Wilkinson Graduate Research Ethics Fellowship, which allowed me to study the ethics of behavioral advertising technologies. I have a BS in Computer Engineering from Purdue University and an MS in Computer Science from North Carolina State University. I am a student member of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). I am also a member of the USACM Public Policy committee. I maintain a personal website at NCSU.
I’m originally from Noblesville, Indiana, which is just northeast of Indianapolis. I received a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from Purdue University in 2003. While at Purdue University, I did undergraduate research with Professor Carla Brodley in network intrusion detection.
After graduating from Purdue, I worked for Advanced Micro Devices in Austin, Texas. During my three years at AMD, I worked as a Software Engineer focusing on Embedded Systems. Primarily my work consisted of writing Linux device drivers for the MIPS based Alchemy line of processors. The Alchemy business unit was sold to Raza Microelectronics.
I’m a Christian, and I attend Fellowship Raleigh, a church plant in downtown Raleigh. I enjoy the ESV Translation.
I’m a Linux hobbiest and a strong open source software advocate. I’m a former Site Administrator for the Gentoo Linux Forums. I’ve been using Gentoo Linux since the 1.1a release.
I’m also a JFK Assassination theorist. As a high school student, I interned with the JFK Assassination records review board in Washington, D.C., and I’ve visited Dealey Plaza in Dallas, TX. For the record, I believe Oswald acted alone, but if you’re going to pick a conspiracy, the one that makes the most sense to me is the theory that the American Mafia had him killed.
Last but not least, I’m a big fan of Indianapolis area sports teams, namely the Indianapolis Colts and the Indiana Pacers.
